After 17 long years of service in the Cadian 417th, Thomas Francis Lindbergh had become a veteran amongst veterans. He had survived that long by employing a cocktail of skill, tactical acumen, plain luck, but most importantly an uncanny knack for knowing when he could ignore idiotic orders and get away with it. After the almost complete annihilation of his regiment by the hands of waaagh Grimmskull, those few who remained were redeployed to Armageddon without so much as a breather. Lindbergh was promoted to the ragged warband’s sergeant, being the most senior member of the regiment still alive. Considering both their small numbers and extensive experience fighting orks, they were deployed as a kill team to operate inside the hives. The squad quickly developed a reputation for getting the job done, although they claimed to be unable to receive orders unusually often. For this reason, a commissar was added to their squad so the issue could be thoroughly investigated and, if necessary, remedied.

Thus unable to ‘not receive’ any suicidal missions any more, Lindbergh and his squad mates soon found themselves in a tough spot. They had been ambushed by a gang of chaos cultists deep inside the hive’s bowels and were pinned down in a position where their only way out was death. When he signaled for reinforcements, command replied that due to a typo from a captain, the objective was actually in a whole other sector and no resources would be diverted to their position. Lindbergh was advised to trust in the emperor, and use his own best judgement to survive.

He only did the latter. Fed up with the carelessness with which the imperium threw their lives away again and again, Lindbergh quickly deduced his only way out and shot the commissar in the neck. The resentment had long since been brewing in his squad, seeing their comrades fall around them one by one due to incompetence and indifference from higher up, and it only took seconds to convince the others to switch sides and start proclaiming the glory of the gods. Brandishing the commissar’s head as a macabre white flag, they managed to impress the cultists and were allowed to join their ranks, as they recognized the value of actual combat trained and experienced warriors for their cause. Within weeks, Lindbergh had taken command.

Now Lindbergh enacts bloody vengeance upon the imperium, and any others unlucky enough to cross his path, all for the glory of the gods.

They call us slaves to darkness. Yet I ask then: Is that worse than slaves to the Imperium? Our masters are cruel, our lives mean nothing to them and they demand absolute obedience, so nothing has changed much. But unlike our former masters, the gods might actually reward us one day. Chaos rewards those who deserve it, and those who lead us do so because they earned that place.

As one would expect from someone with such a pretentious name, Tiberius Pagelow is one bloody tryhard. Always yammering on about attack vectors, overlapping fields of cover fire and spaced advances, he is determined to show off at every occasion he has learned the tactica imperialis by heart. He will duck into cover when getting a sandwich, and set a perimeter with proximity mines when taking a dump. Still all this caution means the warband is unlikely to lose the valuable plasma gun he wields with prodigious accuracy, so Lindbergh puts up with it.

Plasma rifles are a precious commodity in the underhive, so when one starts hissing and trying to bite your arm off, one still does not simply discard it. Instead you give it to a trooper who has a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain and doesn’t really mind all that. That trooper is Samuel Hunt. He seems to have some sort of idiot’s talent for predicting when the gun is going to bite, and enjoys shooting it, usually muttering ‘heh, pretty lights…’. There’s a lot of money riding on whether or not those will be his last words.

Avoid eye contact with Rudolf Fisk. If you somehow do make eye contact, walk slowly backwards until you are out of sight. You might be tempted to hum a calming tune while walking backwards. That would be a mistake.
Some argue Fisk is way too unstable to be wielding a plasma rifle, but no one dares to try and take it from him.

Even in the heat of battle, Mikael Burlev will be listening to his favorite music. It is best described as Japanese elektro-pop, played on bagpipes, although this description still doesn’t quite catch the real horror of it. Burlev served in the steel legion, but one day the ministorum priest attached to his platoon heard that music and promptly declared him heretic. He managed to escape and wandered the underhive, until Lindbergh recognized the music’s potential for shock and awe tactics and recruited him. Burlev rather enjoys being a heretic. Now only rarely someone gives him shit about his music and he’s in way less trouble when he shoots that someone in the face.

Within 16 hours of making planetfall, an entire guardsmen regiment was slaughtered to a man. That man was Eugene Jenkins. Lindbergh found him cowering in a sewage pipe, cradling his knees and rocking back and forth while screaming ‘Lies! The regimental standard was all lies!’. Somewhat sympathetic to the poor sob’s misery, Lindbergh decided to give Jenkins a chance for revenge, and he’s been performing surprisingly well, fueled by the bitterness of the betrayed. Ever since they found a leaflet drop with regimental standards, the squad has lovingly nicknamed Jenkins ‘Colonel’, which annoys the hell out of him.

Benett has no first name. He gambled it away to a daemon. While it should be pretty obvious one should not gamble with daemons, one should definitely not drink and gamble with daemons.

Adam Huber wears spikes on his armour. He tells himself that is why no one gets near him. Everyone else tells him it’s because of his pact with Nurgle and the associated body odor, but he has enough willpower to maintain the self-delusion.

The voices tell Konrad Kodonski all kinds of stuff. They tell him fragments of the future, events happening elsewhere, and that he has a grand destiny. Kodonski quickly figured out his grand destiny is getting rich by using the voices to cheat during poker games. He is quite proud of himself for living up to his full potential.
